In recent years we have focused on the preparation of specific rhizopine derivatives as potential nutritional mediators. Two rhizopine structures have been identified to date and belong to the inosamine family, scyllo-inosamine (SIA) and 3-O-methyl-scyllo-inosamine (3-OMSI). One approach is based on the use of inexpensive myo-inositol, which requires extensive use of protecting group manipulations. Moreover, many of the rhizopine intermediates are very polar and have poor solubility in organic solvents. This research incorporates the use of gallate derivatives to improve current preparative methods and explores new avenues towards inosamines. Long term, this research will help elucidate biological pathways of nitrogen fixation and could lead to the development of environmentally more benign agricultural practices in order to avoid the negative side effects of current commercial fertilizers.
