Around 80% of all known strains of P. aeruginosa contain linear D-alpha-rhamnan with a trisaccharide repeating unit of 1,2- or 1,3-linked rhamnoses in their lipopolysaccharide. Herein we report the development of a new fluorous amine protecting group that can be removed using light and its application to the automated solution-phase synthesis of various lengths of this repeating trisaccharide unit. Efforts to conjugate some of these synthetic oligosaccharides to latex beads for affinity purification of the proteins that are thought to be involved in the biosynthesis of the repeating units will also be discussed.
