Naphthalene diimides (NDIs) are known to be n-type organic semiconductors, and have been shown to have high photostabilities and fluorescence quantum yields. The excellent fluorescence properties make these compounds good candidates for solar-cell dyes and organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). Most of the research on these molecules has focused on substitution at the imide positions. Core-substituted NDIs can be prepared with lower reduction potentials, resulting in more efficient electron transfer from appropriate electron donors, than NDIs having substitution only at the imide nitrogens. The synthesis and characterization of core-substituted NDIs may therefore result in the generation of new organic semiconductors with properties that are superior to existing materials. In the research presented in this poster, the synthesis of core substituted NDIs bearing metal terpyridines is described. These derivatives have been characterized using steady state absorption and emission spectroscopic techniques.
