An important goal of sustainable chemistry is the replacement of precious metal catalysts with earth-abundant metal alternatives. The development of earth-abundant metal hydrogenation and dehydrogenation catalysts has been a serious challenge, as earth abundant metals often lack the high activity, broad substrate scope, and functional group tolerance of precious metal catalysts. A cobalt-based catalytic system has been developed for the hydrogenation of olefins, ketones, aldehydes, and imines under mild conditions. The cobalt catalyst is also effective for the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols at elevated temperatures. The mechanisms of the cobalt-catalyzed hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions will be discussed.
