In 2011, the National Research Council published A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas, which sought to reimagine and revitalize K-12 science education. The Framework is built around three central tenets: a limited number of core scientific and engineering ideas, the practices and applications of science and engineering, and crosscutting ideas and themes that integrate science and engineering. The Framework calls for a �coherent and consistent approach� to K-12 science instruction, and we as science educators need to be able to offer the same vision in our preservice teacher courses. This vision is articulated through the Next Generation Science Standards, the final draft of which is due to be released in Spring 2013. This presentation will discuss the process of mapping the NGSS onto the biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics courses for preservice elementary teachers at Eastern Michigan University. Our goal is to use the NGSS as a tool to guide the modification, and enhance the integration, of our courses in order to better prepare our preservice teachers for their future classrooms.
