Highly concentrated Ti3+ self-doped rutile TiO2 has been synthesized via a facile, solution based oxidation method. Furthermore, this method is seen to be applicable on an industrial level due to its simplistic scalability through the use of oxidizing TiH2 in H2O2 followed by calcinations in Ar gas. Our Ti3+ self-doped rutile TiO2 displayed photocatalytic activity in the visible-region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Characterization techniques such as, powdered X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmissionelectron microscopy (TEM), and an ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were used to characterize the crystalline, structural, and optical properties of the as synthesized samples. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to investigate the integrity of Ti3+ within the bulk of the sample. Furthermore, an industry wastewater sample was used to investigate the photocatalytic activity of the Ti3+ self-doped TiO2which was analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS).
