The estrogens estrone and 17�-estradiol are commonly found in surface waters, where they have been shown to interfere with the development of wildlife. Following absorption of UV light, they individually break down into a variety of photoproducts, with rates, yields, and photoproduct structures depending strongly on the solvent environment of the estrogen. Mixtures of the two also exhibit different photodegradation rates and yields, depending on the solvent. Possible photoproduct structures are identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
