While our group has successfully created supramolecular systems that incorporate substituted fullerenes and transition metal chromophores, the crux of the work centers on the preparation of the bipyridine ligand bridge between the two subunits. While we have reproducibly prepared these ligands, the synthesis is typically very inefficient. Therefore, we have recently explored other avenues to prepare these molecules, including coupling reactions based in aqueous solutions. We are also continuing to consider alternative ligands to bridge the subunits, including those that link multiple transition metals and fullerenes in a single small molecule. This poster will present recent results in these various synthetic studies and initial efforts to incorporate some of these new ligands into polymeric systems (in conjunction with other research group members).
