Our research group has been interested for some time in uniting fullerene and transition metal subunits in supramolecular systems. Based on a complete spectroscopic study, our initial systems involving PPE-substituted bipyridine ligands connecting the two subunits did not demonstrate the anticipated efficient and rapid photoinduced charge transfer. We believe that the majority of this failed connection is due to the relatively long distance between the two subunits. An alternative route is to redesign the linkage through the use of a substituted phenanthroline that can serve the same function but is considerably shorter. This poster describes our work in synthesizing these substituted phenanthrolines and several ensuing transition metal complexes. Data from a detailed spectroscopic study of these systems will also be presented that demonstrates an increased interaction between the two subunits (when compared to our bipyridine-based systems).
