The microwave process enables the direct, and thus rapid and homogenous, heating of the reaction mixture to very high desired temperatures without heating the entire furnace, which saves time and energy. To our knowledge, there is no previous report on the microwave synthesis of Zn-Ti-O related compounds. In this study, a novel microwave-assisted synthetic method to prepare nanocrystalline zinc titanate at relatively low temperature has been developed. We successfully synthesized a nearly pure zinc titanate compound, Zn2TiO4,assisted by current available CEM Discover microwave unit. Effects of reaction conditions on forming zinc titanate have been investigated. The dependence of phase formation and microstructure evolution of system on various heating temperatures was carefully studied. The relationship of the crystal size and shape with the above factors from the microwave-assisted approach will also be discussed in this paper.
