Fac-(CO)3Re(a-diimine) complexes are of importance because they exhibit fluorescence and are cytotoxic against cancer cells. We have synthesized a series of naphthalene-1-sulfonato complexes from the reactions of the corresponding pentylcarbonato complexes, fac-(CO)3(a-diimine)OC(O)OC5H11with naphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (HONs), eq. 1 (a-diimines represent various 1,10-phenanthrolines):fac-(CO)3(a-diimine)OC(O)OC5H11+HONs ? fac-(CO)3(a-diimine)ONs+C5H11OH + CO2(1)The complexes were characterized spectroscopically and in some cases through X-ray crystallography. The sulfonato complexes are cytotoxic against numerous cancer cells. In this presentation, the fluorescent and DNA-binding properties as well as the comparison of the cytotoxic properties of the sulfonato complexes with cisplatin will be provided.
