The talk treats with the recent progress of x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) techniques for rational design and characterization of well-defined and nanoparticle catalysts by presenting our works studied by means of in situ XAFS, real time XAFS, spatially resolved XAFS, 3D laminography-XAFS and total reflection XAFS, such as behavior and role of oxide surfacesin catalysis of supported metal dimers, property of metal-oxygen bonding of metal clusters confined in zeolite pores, biphasic aspect of atomically arranged mixed-oxide solid-solution nanoparticles, temporal, spatially and depth profiles of active nanoparticles in structural architectures, metal-oxide interfacial bonding, etc.
