We will not talk about photochemistry or photo-electrochemistry and we were invited in the hope that some materials properties of doped reducible-oxides (i.e. TiO2 or CeO2) that are important to heterogeneous catalysis might be of interest to people working on photo-electrochemistry or the photochemistry of these surfaces.  We will start with TiO2 and discuss the acid-base interactions between the adsorbates, the chemistry of oxygen-vacancy formation, the interaction with small metal clusters, and the likely mechanism of electric conductivity of these oxides.  We will examine some of the chemistry of doped ceria, the stability of the doped surface and its ability to break the C-H bond in alkanes.  We will also present some experimental results in which these systems have been used to dehydrogenate, oxidize or reform alkanes.
