Al-based MOFs containing carboxylate ions are of interest due to their structural variability, stability and low toxicity. Rigid, linear dicarboxylate linker molecules lead preferably to isoreticular MIL-53-type structures. We have systematically studied this type of compound varying the length and the presence of additional functional groups on the framework flexibility and the sorption behavior. Recently, we have extended our studies to the use of ditopic flexible as well as rigid V-shaped linker molecules in the synthesis of Al-based MOFs. These led to a number of new stable, small pore MOFs and two new framework topologies were discovered. Larger changes in the linker geometry led to new inorganic-building units or new connectivities (Figure 1). Fig. 1. Through the use of mixtures of linker molecules containing different functional groups the selectivity for the adsorption of small molecules can be tuned. The incorporation of -NO2 groups led to the formation of a photochemically active MOF.
