Spectral signature and lineshape of the water species and hydrated molecular groups at the aqueous interface can be measured with the interface selective sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS). It is also possible to probe molecular groups that are hydrated or not hydrated on both side of the aqueous interface from the spectral lineshape or coherent vibrational dynamics. From the SFG data, we will discuss experimental discoveries on the details of how different chemical groups can affect the water structure at the interface, and also how chemical groups with different hydration states will be manifested from their vibrational spectral lineshape.
