Two major approaches have emerged for achieving site-selectivity in small molecule catalyzed C�H oxidation. The first is a directing-group approach where substrates must bear a specific functional group that associates with the catalyst to achieve selectivity and in many cases reactivity. A second approach is the development of small molecule catalysts that are sensitive to the inherent electronic, steric, and stereoelectronic differences between C�H bonds in complex molecule settings. This lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of advances in these existing strategies as well as a discussion of novel strategies.
