Highly-efficient and environmentally-friendly methodologies for the synthesis and processing of materials and molecules are a central interest of modern chemistry. Chemical transformations initiated and/or sustained by mechanical force (also known as mechanochemical reactions) have emerged as viable and exciting alternatives to conventional, solvent-based synthetic methodologies. This contribution will illustrate how mechanochemistry can transform the solvent- and energy-intensive syntheses into processes resembling molecular self-assembly under mild conditions.1 The contribution will highlight recently developed catalytic approaches for quantitative and room-temperature synthesis of porous materials and metallodrugs directly from metal oxides. The use of mechanochemistry in establishing a working model of a 'solvent-free' coordination and organic synthetic research laboratory will be illustrated in the context of coordination polymers and thiourea catalysts.2 The development, results and details of the first methodology for the real time and in situ monitoring of mechanochemical reactions will be presented.3 In addition, this presentation will delineate a new, readily scalable low-energy synthetic technique of 'accelerated aging', inspired by geological processes of mineral neogenesis and applied for the catalyzed synthesis of metal-organic materials directly from metal oxides and sulfides.41.
