A bimetallic nickel (II) disulfide, stabilized by an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (IPr), was synthesized and fully characterized. The complex exhibits square-planar nickel centers with a bridging disulfide (with S1-S2 = 2.011(4) �) that induces a butterfly shape. The oxidation and reduction of the complex were investigated to explore the capability of the compound for sulfur atom transfer in the synthesis of small organic molecules. Additionally, the system was investigated as a scaffold in the pursuit of simple nickel sulfide derivatives.
