The bulky N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands IPr and IPr* (IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene, IPr* = 1,3-bis(2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) have been investigated as a means of stabilizing low-coordinate iron and cobalt amido and imido complexes.  A series IPr and IPr* supported iron and cobalt compounds bearing highly basic alkyl, aryl, and amide moieties have been synthesized.  The reactivity of these species toward primary and secondary amines, as well as with lithium anilides, will be described.
