As our sources of petroleum become more limited, alternative feedstocks to supplement current liquid transportation fuels will become more important. Many classes of catalysts have been used to upgrade lignin or lignocellulosic materials to fuels, including zeolites, carbides, sulfides, phosphides, oxides, and noble metals.  Our research involves the study of catalysts (zeolites and transition metal catalysts) to selectively convert lignin-based feedstocks to fuels.  Ultimately by studying model compounds that resemble the �-O-4 linkage in lignin, we plan to understand how to efficiently depolymerize lignin catalytically to produce value-added products.  This presentation will include recent work using zeolites and bimetallic transition metal catalysts to selectively upgrade lignin model compounds to fuels.
