Manganese is an earth-abundant element and therefore would be a sustainable, economical source for making a catalyst for the utilization of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Various manganese complexes: Mn(L)(CO)3Br where L= 5,5'-dimethyl-4,4'bipyrdine 4,4'-dimethyl-4,4'bipyrdine, bathocuproine and bathophenanthroline were synthesized. Electrochemical evaluation of these catalysts for the reduction of CO2 into CO was carried out and compared to the analogous rhenium compounds. A proton-source is necessary to observe catalysis with manganese catalysts, except when L= bathophenanthroline. A mechanism, based upon the delocalization of the radical (�enhanced non-innocence�), is proposed.
