Ultrafast x-ray absorption experiments have been carried out with our ultrafast x-ray spectrometer system at the Advanced Photon Source, 7ID-C. While the x-ray pulses produced by the synchrotron are about 100 ps long, a temporal resolution of 2 ps has been achieved by detecting the x-radiation transmitted though the sample with a streak camera. The iron K-edge shift of a sample of Fe(CO)5 and other systems was measured at repetition rates of several kHz. The results are discussed and the concept for measurements with a time resolution in the few 100-fs regime is described.
