Novel LC benzoxazines which have phenyl or biphenyl, ester and azomethine groups in the mesogenic moiety were synthesized The LC behavior of the novel biphenyl-containing benzoxazines was investigated by DSC and POM observation and compared with the analogous phenyl-containing LC benzoxazines. While LC benzoxazines having phenyl groups showed only a nematic phase on heating, LC benzoxazines having biphenyl groups showed a smectic phase as well as a nematic phase. The LC-isotropic transition temperatures of the novel LC benzoxazines having biphenyl groups were more than 100 �C higher than those of the LC benzoxazines having phenyl groups. The highest LC-isotropic transition temperature reached as high as 238 �C. The onset of polymerization of the LC benzoxazines was found at 199~222 �C, depending on the length of the alkyl chains attached to the oxazine ring
