Iron-cyanide chemistry has been continuously investigated from the first synthesis of Prussian Blue in 1704 to the present day. Although Alfred Werner did not work directly with cyanide as a ligand, he was well aware of the previous work on [Fe(CN)6]4-/3-, [Fe(CN)5(NO)]2-, and [Fe(CN)5(CO)]3-. We have been able to synthesize a series of simple Fe-CN coordination compounds by the reaction of Fe(II) with CN-, which was in fact the reaction which was used in 1704 to synthesize Prussian Blue.
