Metal-organic complexes containing a ditungsten or dimolybdenum quadruply bonded metal center with conjugated carboxylate or amidinate ligands present many interesting photophysical properties, including intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions tunable through the visible region and long-lived singlet excited states.  These properties make the complexes particularly attractive as photon harvesters in donor-acceptor systems or for photochemical transformations.  Utilizing femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopic techniques, the excited state characteristics of several such compounds have been investigated.  Transient absorption and time-resolved infrared data will be discussed as a means of assessing the photosensitizing abilities of these complexes.
