Inspired by the anti-inflammatory and bactericidal action of bismuth subsalicylate (BSS),1,2 the investigation of bismuth complexes with salicylic acid and its anions remains a highly active area of research. Recently, bismuth disalicylate has been mechanochemically synthesized directly from bismuth oxide, and its crystal structure has been determined from powder X-ray diffraction data, making it the only known crystal structure of a bismuth-salicylic acid complex without auxiliary organic ligands.3 This presentation will highlight our recent investigation of bismuth disalicylate. Starting from stoichiometric bismuth oxide and salicylic acid, the synthesis of bismuth disalicylate can be easily scaled up to at least 10 grams by solvent-free aging method. The conversion of bismuth disalicylate into BSS through a slurry-based hydrolysis route is readily reversible under milling or aging conditions. The ability to use bismuth disalicylate as a precursor for high-yielding synthesis of bismuth salicylate oxo-nanoclusters enables designing a general synthesis of such nanoclusters and their supramolecular decoration. Due to their composition and nano-effects, the pharmaceutical properties of these bismuth salicylate oxo-nanoclusters are also a promising area for further investigation.G. G. Briand and N. Burford.
