Antimicrobial peptides are desirable therepeutic targets since their mode of action: interaction with the bacterial membrane, retards the actuation of resistance. Their therepeutic use is limited by an incomplete knowledge of their mechanism of membrane translocation. Solid-state deuterium nmr gives atomic scale resolution of peptides in a model membrane, allowing elucidation of secondary structure and topology for example.  Synthesis of PG lipids, specifically deuterated in the head group allows the surface of a bacterial membrane mimic interacting with an antimicrobial peptide to be probed.
