A new process for the C-N cross coupling of hindered primary amines has been developed. A series of biaryl phosphine ligands have been investigated and a new family of ligands has been shown to be optimal for this transformation. Kinetic studies of the reaction suggest that the rate-determining step differs in the reactions of aryl chlorides and aryl bromides. These studies have led to the design of a new ligand, the use of which has improved the scope and efficiency of the reaction.
