Supercritical carbon dioxide(scCO2) has been suggested as an attractive, environmentally benign, green solvent for heavy metal ion extraction. However, direct extraction of metal ions by supercritical CO2is highly inefficient because of the charge neutralization requirement and weak solute-solvent interactions. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the use of highly CO2�soluble chelating ligands has been suggested to make the CO2�insoluble metal ions CO2�soluble and extractable through the in situformation of CO2-soluble metal complexes. We designed and synthesized novel CO2-philic chelating ligands containing both metal binding segments, such as dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether moiety and CO2-philic segments, fluorous alky chain moieties, for more effective supercritical CO2metal extraction. Solubilities of newly synthesized various dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether derivatives and the metal extraction efficiencies for various metal ions (Co, Cu, Cs, Sr etc) in scCO2were tested.
