The importance of carbohydrates has been demonstrated in various biological processes. Specifically, furanoses are integral to the structure and function of essential biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, and ATP. Once modified, these five-membered sugars exhibit distinctive properties and play different roles in the human body. Because these sugars have several different hydroxyl groups, it is important to distinguish between them upon modification. Herein, we report our progress toward the use of transition metal catalysis to selectively functionalize furanoses.
