Investigations toward the synthesis of the indole alkaloid Subincanadine E are reported in a multi-step sequence starting from tryptamine. This natural product was first isolated from Picralima nitida cell suspension cultures under the name Pericine in 1982 and later as Subincanadine E from Aspidosperma subincanum in 2002. It is the most potent compound of its class with in vitrotoxicity against both lymphoma and carcinoma cell lines (LD50=0.3 �g/mL and 4.4 �g/mL, respectively).
