The enactment of Tobacco Control Act in 2009 marked an important moment in a renaissance in tobacco regulatory science. Billions of dollars are being made available to study questions set out by the FDA to help them develop science-based regulations related to tobacco and nicotine. This funding will have an international influence and is likely to bring a substantial number of new researchers into the field. Industrial opportunities for employment are also likely to increase, both with the regulatory demand for more science to support conventional tobacco products, but also with the need to chemically characterize potentially breakthrough innovations such as tobacco products that heat rather than burn tobacco and e-cigarettes.
