Here we report our recent findings on the mechanistic study of gold(I) cyanide - catalyzed annulation reactions of hydroxyaldehydes and aryl alkynes under conventional heating conditions. The reaction intermediates and yields were monitored by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy with benzyl ether as an internal reference compound. The gold/ligand ratio, hydroxyaldehyde/gold ratio, alkyne/gold ratio and internal reference compounds were investigated in this study.The optimal reagent ratio established from this mechanistic study included a AuCN: hydroxyaldehyde:alkyne ratio of 1:2:2. NMR spectroscopy data showed evidence for an organogold intermediate.
