The synthesis and analysis of acetaminophen was proposed by a team of undergraduate students for a second-semester laboratory in the context of a student developed and led curriculum. With a more relaxed environment than a lecture hall, and a more personal interaction with instructors than in multitudinous classes, this was the ideal setting in which to introduce an early exposure to computational chemistry. Spartan, a user-friendly computational package that spans a variety of theoretical approaches, was used effectively by the lead-team to provide a visual representation of the molecules involved in the laboratory experiments and to enhance their understanding of IR spectra. Experimental and calculated spectra are compared and used to establish the nature of the product.
