The effect of lignin content on the properties of nanopapers from Norway spruce was evaluated. SEW fibers containing 0, 4, and 14 % of residual lignin were microfluidized for deconstruction into cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), or more property, lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) and nanopapers were manufactured upon filtration and pressing. A detailed characterization of the nanopapers was carried out and the effect of lignin was clarified in light of recent reports by us and other groups that explored the same subject with limited control on the presence of other residual cell wall components. The presence of lignin reduced significantly the dewatering time in wet nanopaper manufacture, and resulted in nanopaper mechanical properties comparable to those reported in the literature from fully bleached CNF. Lignin increased the water contact angle of the nanopapers and reduced their water absorption capacity and surface energy, which was determined for the dispersive, acidic and basic contributions. A study of the porosity and pore size distribution of the samples revealed that the micropores were reduced in size and number with the presence of lignin, which correlated with the oxygen and water vapor barrier properties that were determined. In summary, LCNF show unique properties, which open new application possibilities of such valuable bioproduct.
