For the first time, polyaniline (PANI) doped with acidic phosphate ester was dissolved successfully in the cellulose solution in 7wt% NaOH/12wt% urea aqueous system with cooling. The PANI dissolution in the cellulose solution arose as a result of a complexation between PANI and cellulose through hydrogen bonds. The inclusion complexes consisted of PANI and cellulose existed in the aqueous solution, showing a good miscibility. From the composite solution, dark green and transparent PANI/cellulose films, hydrogels, fibers etc were constructed facilely via the association of the two components by noncovalent interaction. The PANI/cellulose films exhibited good mechanical properties and the conductivity. The hydrogels displayed a continuous and linear crawling motion under the low applied electric field. The composite fibers had good antistatic properties, due to the conductive polyaniline. This work has opened up a completely new avenue to construct the supramolecular materials from the intransigent cellulose and enticing PANI via a simple, facile and environmentally friendly process for a variety of applications.
