Unimolecular rate constants were measured for HF and HCl elimination from CH3CHFCl prepared with approximately 90 kcal/mol of internal energy by the combination of CH3 radicals with CHFCl radicals.  The competition between collisional deactivation, forming CH3CHFCl, and unimolecular reactions, forming CH2=CHCl and CH2=HCF, was used to obtain the experimental rate constants of 1 x 1010 s-1 for HCl loss and 2 x 108 s-1 for HF elimination.  Components of the reaction mixture were separated using GC with FID detection of products.  The HCl/DCl and HF/DF kinetic isotope effect was obtained by measuring the rate constants for decomposition of CD3CHFCl.  These data will be essential in unraveling the competition between 1,2-HX and 1,1-HX loss for X = Cl and F for CD3CHFCl.
