We report the synthesis and characterization of novel self-assembling pyrazine-acenes substituted with various functional groups.  The objective of this research is to tune the electronic properties and morphologies of self-assembled structures simultaneously.  Two systems will be presented: 1) pyrazine-acenes with p-core extenders and 2) donor-acceptor-donor in which pyrazine-acenes serve as acceptors.  Selective tuning of either ELUMO or EHOMO will be discussed in conjunction with frontier molecular orbitals generated by theoretical evaluations. The self-assembly properties of these new pyrazine-acenes, especially one-dimensional assembly, are discussed with extensive microscopic investigations.
