The effect of toluene on the molecular mobility of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PMMA adsorbed on the silica surface has been studied. The incorporation of toluene into the bulk polymer and surface-adsorbed polymer was carried out by vapor sorption. The amount of solvent uptake at different times was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which was also used to study the diffusion of the toluene into the polymer system. The mobility of the polymer and the surface adsorbed polymer was studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A substantial decrease in the glass transition temperature (Tg) was observed for the bulk polymer when toluene was absorbed. For surface adsorbed polymers, the effect of toluene was dependent on the amount of polymer adsorbed on surface.
