The synthesis, characterization, and polymerization of bis(4-trifluorovinyl phenyl ether)methylsilane (SiH-TFVE) will be presented. This new TFVE monomer was prepared via nucleophilic substitution of methyldichlorosilane with TFVE Grignard or organolithium reagents, and characterized by 1H, 19F, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Condensate-free, thermal polymerization of SiH-TFVE was shown to produce optically-transparent, film-forming polymer with full retention of Si-H functionality. Polymer structure was characterized by NMR, FT-IR, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Bulk thermal properties were determined from thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Facile post-polymerization functionalization via hydrosilylation and dehydrogenative coupling will be demonstrated with an emphasis on incorporating crosslinking and/or chromophore moieites for electro-optic applications.
