I will describe recent results studying the structure and composition of model metalcatalysts in the form of single crystals, foils and size-controllednanoparticles.  These include Cobalt, Ruthenium, core-shyell Co-Ni, and Co-Fe. In the case of single crystals we used STM to determine the adsorbates chemisorbed structure (CO, CO2, H) as a function of coverage. New CO-H structures were found that could be precursorsto reaction steps. In the case of nanoparticles (Co, Co-Ni and Ru), the focuswas on in situ spectroscopy (XPS and XAS) to determine metal oxidation state and adsorbate chemical structure.  Ex-situ and in-situ TEM were also used to characterize changes in structure brought about by exposure to syngas under reaction conditions.
