We have developed multiplex mass spectrometry imaging technique utilizing a linear-ion-trap orbitrap mass spectrometer that can obtain both high mass resolution and high spatial resolution mass spectrometry imaging (HR2 MSI) in a single data acquisition, where MS/MS or MS3 imaging (MSn MSI) can also be incorporated at the same time [1].  We have applied this technique for various applications, including chemical imaging of latent finger printing [2].  Recently, this technique has been even extended to adapt polarity switching to achieve both positive and negative ion imaging in a single data acquisition [3].  We will also demonstrate the application of this technique for high spatial resolution metabolic biology in corn seed germination, to obtain structural information of molecular compounds involved in this complicated metabolic biology.
