Glycosylationis a very important reaction which involves the coupling between a glycosyl donor and an alcohol as a glycosyl acceptor to construct the alpha and beta glycosyl linkages at the anomeric position of the sugar unit. In connection with our study on the indium salt-induced O and S-glycosylation of acetobromo alpha-D-glucose, we describe herein a versatile method for glycosylation of various benzyl ester alcohols. We have discovered unprecedented hydrolysis of a benzyl ester group during the course of the glycosylation reaction.
