The catalytic properties of supported metallic nanoparticles on titanium dioxide (TiO2) have become increasingly important in the heterogeneous catalysis industry in recent years. In particular, the catalytic properties of reduced (TiO2) have been extensively studied but there still remains an unclear understanding of the reactivity of the system due to difficulties in obtaining direct experimental evidence. In this study we propose the use of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS), and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) to characterize reduced TiO2 and understand the interaction of H2O with reduced rutile TiO2(110). We present the direct observation of water dissociation using STM and the ability to distinguish between oxygen vacancies, OH, H, and H2O on the surface.
