Lead binds to ligands that are essential for normal physiological functions, and inhibits oxygen & calcium transport.  This interferes with heme synthesis, and activates Protein Kinase C, which interferes with cell growth and differentiation.  Lead exposure also causes many side effects in humans, including mental retardation, seizures, comas, and even death.  According to the Center for Global Environment Education, the Mississippi River supplies drinking water to more than 18 million people in the central part of the United States.  This research project used Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy to monitor the lead levels at different locations along the Mississippi River in Dubuque and the Catfish Creek tributary to the Mississippi River.  The lead levels were then compared to the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency, and to those reported in previous research projects to determine their trends over the years and if there is a correlation between nitrate and lead levels.
