Silver(II) oxides have interesting catalytic and electrochemical properties, and Ag2O is isostructural with Cu2O, on which we have studied crystal face dependence of reactivity. In order to examine applicability of our findings on Cu2O to Ag2O, silver oxide polycrystalline films were electrodeposited on conductive glass substrate from [Ag(NH3)2]+ solution by releasing Ag+ with electrogenerated H+, which was developed by Izaki, et al. Drastically different phases and morphologies of AgxO were obtained by varying the pH of the deposition solution and deposition method (i.e., galvanostatic or potentiostatic). For instance, galvanostatic deposition (1 mA/cm2) from a pH 10 solution produced films consisted of AgO base layer and larger Ag2O crystals. On the other hand, potentiostatic deposition, where the potential and current density were equivalent to the galvanostatic counterpart, resulted in less efficient deposition of AgxO crystals.
