The purpose of this study was to analyze a painting of unknown origin in an effort to determine the materials and pigments used, and, possibly date the painting to better understand how to preserve the work of art. The painting was studied by taking paint samples and cross sections to look at the layers. Initial analysis consisted of using visible, ultraviolet, and reflected infrared light in order to gain information about various paint layers through non-evasive techniques. Further analysis was conducted by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), which showed the presence of iron and calcium. This finding was further supported from information obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Further testing with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) detected the presence of C, O, Mg, Na, Al, Si, Ca, and Ti, allowing for possible identification of the pigments used. Furthermore, fluorescence microscopy demonstrated the presence of lipids, which signifies that linseed oil was used as the binder. Additional analysis was conducted by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) and high-performance liquid chromatography to investigate organic components.  Based on these results, an overall assessment of the painting is provided.
