Prosopis glandulosa, mesquite tree, is a medium-sized tree or shrub located in arid regions of North America. This drought tolerant, flowering tree becomes a source of food for herbivores during the dry season.  The leaves and stems of P. glandulosa produce and emit phytogenic volatile organic compounds (PVOCs), which may have an effect on the diet selections of grazers in the Southwestern United States and Mexico. The purpose of this research is to isolate and identify the exact PVOCs of P. glandulosa. To date identified PVOCs are limonene and camphor. Currently a methodology utilizing solid-phase microextraction (SPME), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and retention indices (RI) is being developed.  Future research will include attempts at isolating and positively identifying PVOCs commonly found in plants such as a-pinene, tricyclene, and borneol.
