Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is an endothermic reaction and the catalysts used for studying this reaction are unsubstituted lanthanum zirconate (LZ), Rh substituted LRhZ (2 wt%) and LRhZ (5 wt%) pyrochlores. Transient studies in CO2 and CH4 were conducted on these three catalysts. This helps in determining the relative rate of formation of H2 and CO over the catalyst surface during DRM reaction. It was observed that the H2 and CO evolved simultaneously during transient pulsing suggesting that they are formed from the same surface reaction. The postulated mechanism suggests that the activated CH4 dissociates into C(s) and H2 and the CO2 acitivates to form carbonates. The H2 then reduces the carbonates to form CO and H2O. This H2O then reacts with the C(s) to form COa nd H2 simultaneously.
