The formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from the interaction of Ag+ ion with natural organic matter (NOM) under environmentally relevant conditions such as pH, temperature, and UV light was investigated. Increase in pH and temperature increased the formation of AgNPs. The UV light enhanced the formation of AgNPs. Also, the formation AgNPs depends on the source of NOM used as a reducing agent. A plausible mechanism of the formation of AgNPs is proposed that described the observed results. The formed AgNPs were stable for several months with only a 15% decrease SPR peak of AgNPs. The environment significance of these results in terms of transportation of organic matter-stabilized AgNPs will be presented. Bioavailability and ecotoxicity of these AgNPs will also be discussed.
